Book Sale

Our semi-annual book sale is coming up September 27 through October 2nd during regular library hours. If you have books you would like to donate to our sale, you may bring them to the library. DO NOT bring us any damaged, yellowed, water stained, smelly books. We also cannot use Readers Digest Condensed Books. Please make sure a staff member okays your contributions before you leave.

Tour #5 is a Naturalist Narrated Tour. follow the route Ozawindib & Schoolcraft did in 1832 when they recorded the Headwaters of the Mississippi River. Wildlife interpretation of Bald Eagles, Common Loons, Indian & Logging History. Two hour boat cruise on the Chester Charles II.

Gibbs Museum of Pioneer and Dakotah Life. We are looking at two different special events they host. The first one is on October 31st and is called Old-Time Halloween. In the mid-1800's, especially Irish immigrants, brought their Halloween traditions to America. Carve a turnip to put in your window to ward off evil spirts; Trick-or-Treat at Jane Gibbs' house; make popcorn balls in the Red Barn and enjoy a cup of cider!
The other event is calle "A Gibbs' Pioneer Christmas" This is held on December 4 and 5th. A two-hour program. Join them in an old-fashioned mid-1800's Minnesota Christmas. Step back in time when you visit the summer kitchen and see how pioneer women prepared special foods for Christmas; tour the original Gibbs' home and the Victorian parlor where costumed interpreters reveal how Christmas practices changed over time. Enjoy Christmas carols and activities, hot chocolate and Christmas treasts. Visit our gift shop for old-time stocking stuffers.

Bus Tour #3

This tour is of the Oliver H. Kelley Farm near Elk River, MN. You will step onto a working 1860's farm. Pick heirloom vegtables from the garden, visit the farmhands and animals at the barn, or churn butter and see what's cooking in the farmhouse. Costumed guides work the fields with oxen and horses. At different times throughout the season, you'll see plowing with oxen, horse-powered threshing, haymaking and other harvest activites. The garden and fields are filled with many of the same plants the kelley farm grew over 130 years ago. IN the house, try your hand at domestic crafts like making straw hats and soap.

Tour #2 Hjemkomst Center

On November 13 the event being held is called Pangea - Cultivate our Cultures. This is an indoor celebration of ethnic, racial and cultural diversity in the Red River Valley with exhibits, performances and foods to sample. There will be 10 food vendors from various cultures. Visitors can buy food tickets at 50 cents per ticket. The food is very affordable and there will be meal offerings, not just samplings. there will be Danish, Sri Lankan, Mexican, and other food options. There is also a church tour. For the children they have a Passport Activity. There will be signs for the children to go to different areas and see and learn something of that country or do an activity. When they complete it, they will get their "Passport" stamped. They even take the child's picture to put in the Passport. There is also a new exhibit called "150 Years of Immigration to Clay County". You can also visit this exhibit. the hours are from 10-4 p.m. in Moorhead, MN.

We would go on a Saturday, either October 2 or 9th. The event starts at noon. 2 stages of continuous entertainment (variety of music), German food court (other food also available at the restaurant in the Holiday Inn); German vendors. Everything is held indoors.

Upcoming Bus Tour

We are looking at doing another bus tour for Big Stone County residents. Following the last tour, I was given a number of ideas of places to go. I narrowed it down to five locations, which you get to vote on. The one receiving the most votes will be followed up on as far as costs, transportation, meals, etc. See other posts for a description of the five: 1) Okotberfest in New Ulm; 2) Hjemkomst Center in Moorhead; 3) Olvier H. Kelley Farm in Elk River; 4) Gibbs Museum in St. Paul; 5) Itasca State Park. Votes need to be in no later than September 1st. Children's Saturday Reading Program

Due to an illness and subsequent death in the family and being away from work so much, we will not be having this event. I only had two people volunteer to help with it and I just cannot get it all together in time to do justice for the event and for the children to have one. We will be looking at doing this at a later time. Thanks for all your comments and suggestions.

August 28th Back to School Event

I am trying to pull together an afternoon event on August 28th for a Back to School theme for the children. I have a storyteller, Bob Gasch, a puppeteer, Dianne Gasch, Emily from Sibley State Park to do a craft with the children and some other possiblities. I would like to have this as an afternoon event, concluding with Bob Gasch telling us scary stories around a campfire with hot dogs and smores. I need help! Anyone who would like to work with me on this, or can do a craft or a sing along, anything, please contact me so we can get the date set and the contracts sent out. 839-2494.

Indiana Bones is coming to Ortonville!

Yes, Indiana Bones will be at the Ortonville Public Library on Saturday, July 17th at 1:00 p.m. Indiana Bones is a storyteller froom New Mexico. He has one an Emmy Award for his Storytelling.
Indiana bones will spark your imagination and help ignite the flames of exploration through reading with his unique approach to Storytelling!
the titles of the stories he will be performing are: "Thor and the Land of Giants"; "The Runestone of Minnesota"; and "Dragons From an Ancient Land".
The theme of his program is : "Treasures of North Mythology and More! Stories for the Whole Family."
Following his storytelling, he will allow photographs to be taken of him with children, etc. Don't miss this Emmy Award Winning Storyteller! A once in a lifetime chance.

Life in Big Stone & Swift County During World War II

Marlys Gallagher, Swift County Historical Society, will offer us a snapshot back in time...in Big Stone and Swift County. She will have items and talk about these two counties during World War II...on the homoefront. Marlys will be at Northridge Residence on Thursday, July 15 at 7:00 p.m. She will also be at Grace Home on Thursday, July 22 at 2:00 p.m. Feel free to attend either or both presentations. Marlys has a wealth of knowledge to share with all. This project is funded in part or in whole with money from Minnesota's Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

Sibley State Park

Emily Lorenzen from the Sibley State park is a part of MinnAqua/Naturalist Corps. She will be at the Ortonville Public Library for the Summer Reading Program on Wednesday, June 30, 2010. She will be doing different water projects with the children. Possibilities include Food Chain Tag; Fish Sense; Pop can Casting, and others. The programs will be held during the regular times of the summer reading program. This program will be at 1:00 for 1-4th grades and at 2:30 for preschool through kindergarten.

Senior Surf Day

Senior Surf Day will be held at the Ortonville Public Library on July 28, 2010 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. You will have the opportunity to learn computer and Internet basics. The class is open to all SENIORS who are interested in learning more about computers and the Internet. The cost is FREE!!!!! You will learn computer basics, Internet searching, and how to access websites of interest to seniors. These services are being provided by: Minnesota River Area Agency on Aging, Inc.

New Databases

Check out our new databases that are available for you to use from your home. the first one is Powerspeak Languages. Whether you want to learn for personal enrichment, for business or to get ready to travel abroad, powerspeak languages is an online resource to learn: Spanish, French, German, Mandarin Chinese, and English for Spanish speakers. There is a guided tutorial to help you get started.
The second one is Chilton's Database. All you need here is the kind of vehicle you are looking for and all the information will be there, just as if you had the printed Chilton's manual in front of you.

Summer Reading Program

We will start the summer reading program off with registration the week of June 7. On June 16th, we will be having Curtis Allan Hed's Magic Show at the Ortonville Public Library at 1:00 p.m. This is open to everyone, not just summer reading participants. We also are asking that an adult accompanies the child/ren to the program. The reason is we are trying to promote more family activities. Many of you work, so if a grandparent or someone else can come along that would be great. First program will be 23rd. 1st - 4th grade will meet at 1:00 p.m.; preschool - kindergarten will meet at 2:30 p.m. and 5th - 12th grade (teens) will meet at 4:00 p.m. This year's theme is Make a Splash @ Your Library! We have lots of fun water projects; pirate projects, etc. Lots of prizes will be available again for you to purchase with your library dollars. The programs will be held every Wednesday with the last program being on July 28th.

Jill Kalz visit

Jill Kalz visited our library on Saturday, May 1st. We had about 15 people in attendance. The presentation was wonderful! Her book "Farmer Cap" was a big hit with young and old alike.

Bus Trip to MN History Center

We still have room on the buses for the MN History Center Trip. The bus ride and ticket into the exhibit is free to you. All you are responsible for is your meals. There is over 6,000 square feet of exhibits of World War II, The Depression and The Boom Years. We will have a guided tour of the exhibit as well as looking on your own. Douglas Wood

Douglas Wood, author, compose, speaker, singer and wilderness guide will be at the Ortonville Public Library on Thursday, May 13th at 4 p.m.

Bus Tour to History Center

The Big Stone and Swift County Libraries are joinging together to provide a FREE bus tour to the Minnesota History Museum to see the "Minnesota's Greatest Generation: The Depression, The War, The Boom" exhibit on Tuesday, May 11 and Saturday, May 15th. The Libraries will be paying for your bus ride and for your admition ticket into the exhibit. Seating is limited to 100 people per day. This will be on a first come, first seated basis. To reserve your seat, contact the Ortonville Public Library at 320-839-2494; Graceville at 320-748-7332; Appleton at 320-289-1681; Benson at 320-842-7981; and Kerkhoven at 320-264-2141. The bus will leave Graceville at 7:15; Ortonville 7:45; Appleton 8:15; Benson 9:15, and Kerkhoven at 9:45. We should arrive home at Kerkhoven at 6:30; Benson at 7:00; appleton at 7:45; Ortonville at 8:15 and Graceville at 8:45.

Jill Kalz

Jill Kalz is the author of nearly 50 children's books and works as a children's book editor in Mankato, MN. As a resident of New Ulm, the small German town where she was born and raised, kalz has a fondness for sauerkraut and an unusually high tolerance for polks. She lives with her dog Rum Tum Tuckerbean, a handsome bichon who shows up as a character in some of her books. Adult Reading Program

The Adult Reading Program is now underway. Any adult who enjoys reading may sign up for the program. The only requirement of the program is to read books! No Reports! Media Center Open House

The Media Center will be hosting an Open House on Wednesday, February 3 from 12 to 5 p.m. There will be a ribbon cutting at 12:15. KDIO Radio will be doing a live broadcast from the Media Center from noon to 2 p.m. Refreshments will be served by the friends of the Ortonville Public Library Foundation.
A powerpoint presentation will be running and demonstrations on equipment will be done.
The Institute of Museum and Library Services, a federal agency that fosters innovation, leadership and a lifetime of learning, in conjunction with State Library Services, a division of the Minnesoat Department of Education, which administers federal LSTA grants supports the LSTA project sponsored by the Ortonville Public Library.

Facebook Workshop

We have received the laptops, cabinets, smartboard, and printer for the media center. Everything is starting to really fall in place and should be set by Christmas time. Christmas movies

We are showing Christmas movies at the Library from 1 - 3 on Saturdays during the month of December. This Saturday, December 12th, we will be showing "Shrek the Halls" and a few other short movies. The event is open to anyone who wants to come and see a movie. On Saturday, December 19th we will be showing "Elf". Come to the library and watch a movie.

Brent Olson

Brent Olson will be at the Ortonville Public Library on Saturday, December 12 from 1 - 3 p.m. He has a new book out called "Papa: Figuring Out What Matters". Brent is from the Clinton area and has published other books. The Friends of the Ortonville Public Library will be serving refreshments. The event will be held upstairs in the library. If you cannot make it to see Brent in the afternoon, he will be at the Graceville Public Library from 10 - 12 on Saturday.

Ortonville City Election results

Voters of the City of Ortonville went to the polls on Tuesday, November 3rd and elected a new mayor and two new council people. Elected to the mayor position is David Dinnel. Bob Meyer was reelected to the city council along with new council members Mel Reinke and Angela Doren. Congratulations to the newly elected members of the City Council. A big thank you also goes out to the mayor and council members who will not be returning. Your dedication to the city has not gone unnoticed. We thank you for all of your support you have given to the library. We look forward to working with the new council in 2010.

Angela Serocki Author Visit

Angela Serocki, Browns Valley, MN, will be visiting the Ortonville Public Library on Saturday, November 14, 2009 from 1 - 3 p.m. Stop in to hear her talk about her book "You've Been Conned: Defying Depression by the Grace of God". Angie learned the role of forgiveness and acceptance within relationships through her heavenly father. She slowly pulled herself rom a two-year depression that had threatened to destroy her entire family. Angela hopes to share the trugh behind the battles we face. Books will also be available for purchase. Refreshments will be served.

Saturday Children's Reading Program

The Saturday children's reading program will begin this Saturday, October 24 th at 10:30 a.m. The program is open to all children ages 3 through kindergarten. As this is right before Halloween, we would like to have the children in costume if you can. Not required! You may call the library to register or just come on Saturday morning. We will be having the program every other Saturday through the end of April 2010. Please come and join us for some fun!

Teen Program being Offered

Media Center Surveys

We are currently conducting a survey of classes, etc. that people living in the Big Stone area might be interested in. Please stop by the library, EDA, City Office, Senior Center or the BSLA Chamber of Commerce to pick up a survey. Return the survey to any of these places. This will help us to determine what is needed or wanted in the area. Please help us to make this Media Center a success. We are also looking for people who would be willing to teach any class. Media Center Coordinator Wanted

The Ortonville Public Library is hiring a Media Center Coordinator. This is a contracted position with Pioneerland Library System. The person should be a self-starter who is organized, has a high school diploma, has general computer and technical skills and has a strong background withing with the general public. Duties may included coordinating classes, line up instructors, track media center usage, work with the instructors on evaluations of classes, set up room and equipment, publicity including news and brochurs and two reports for the grant. The position is for 20 hours per week at $20 per hour through 6-30-2010. There is a possibility the position could be extended. If you have questions, please contact Vicki at 320-839-2494.

Brenda Ehrmantraut

The author visit on October 10 with be done with the Ortonville Family Readiness Group. They will provide cookies and juice for all. There will also be a Halloween Party for the kids following the presentation by the author. Many families feel they can handle this on their own, we want to reach out and help in any way possible. If it is having an author who has written books on the subject, or hosting a party for the kids to enjoy, we want to do it. Mark your calendars and come to the Library on October 10th to enjoy a great author, children will do an activity and enjoy the party, and refreshments will be served.

Julie was a huge success on Saturday. We only had 17 people here but they were a lively bunch! They had so many questions and Julie had terrific answers. She answered questions about her books and also how she got started and her previous job with WCCO. She also answered questions for those who are writing a book. Questions such as, how, styles, how to get a publisher, etc. A very good presentation. Her books are available at the Ortonville Public Library. Stalking Susan and Missing Mark. Thanks to all who came and supported us.

Browns Valley Author to Visit

Angela Serocki of Browns Valley has written a book called "You've Been Conned: Defying Depression by the Grace of God". The book will be released on November 10, 2009. She will be at the Ortonville Public Library on Saturday, November 14th from 1 - 3 p.m. to discuss her book and take questions. She will also have books for sale. She will be on the KDIO radio station on Wednesday, August 26th at 8:30 a.m. discussing her book. The Friends of the Library will serve refreshments.

Children's author to visit Library

Aberdeen author, Brenda Ehrmantraut, will be at the Ortonville Public Library on Saturday, October 10 from 1 - 3 p.m.
Brenda has written three children's books. The first book is called "I Want One Too!". The book is about a girl who wants everything her older brother has. This book will put you into giggles!
The second and third books were requested by friends of hers to write. The books are written to help children who have a loved one serving in the armed services. The second one is called "Night Catch". In this book, the father enlists the help of the North Star for a nightly game of catch with his son while he is deployed. The third book was just released this spring called "Hope Weavers". In this book the little girl asks her dad, "Why do you have to go, Daddy?" He gives her a caterpillar and assures her that if she is patient, the caterpillar will answer he question. She watches, waits, and finally understand the importance of a soldier's job.

Julie Kramer to visit Library

A winner of this year's Minnesota Book Awards will speak and sign books at the Ortonville Public Library Saturday, September 19 from 1 - 3 p.m. Julie Kramer, author of "Stalking Susan" and "Missing Mark", grew up on a corn and cattle farm on the Minnesota-Iowa state line. Kramer, a career television news producer, used to run WCCO-TV's award-winning I-Team. Now she does freelance network news producing.
In "Missing Mark", a TV reporter answers a want ad reading "Wedding Dress For Sale: Never Worn" and is pulled into a dangerous missing person case. People Magazine recently gave "Missing Mark" a big rave.
In "Stalking Susan", a television reporter discovers a serial killer targeting women named Susan. "Stalking Susan" won the Minnesota Book Award for genre fiction and Best First Mystery at the RT Reviewers Choice Awards. It was a finalist for the Mary Higgins Clark Award and is also a nominee for Best First Novel in two other mystery competitions, the Anthony and the Barry Awards.
Kramer will talk further about her path to publication and writing process, as well as how the news media operations. Copies of both books will be available for purchase at the event.
This program is supported by the Minensota Book Awards through grants from the Institute of Museum and Library Services in conjunction with State Library Services, a division of the Minnesota Department of Education, and the Minnesota Library Foundation.

I have tallied up the reading by the children for the 2009 summer reading program. The Preschool through kindergarten read 1,060 hours; first through third grade read 675 hours and fourth through sixth grade read 270.5 hours for a total of 2,005.5 hours read during the five weeks of the summer reading program. Express Yourself At Your Library!

An art program, sponsored by Pioneerland-SAMMIE-Plum Creek Teen Cooperative, will be held at the Ortonville Public Library on Thursday July 2 and Thursday July 9 from 2 - 4 p.m. the goal is to introduce teens to the world of art, hone skills that may already be developing in teens, and have fun! Teens will be instructed in clay sculpture, sidewalk chalk murals, "Express Yourself" paintings using poster board, paint, markers and pens, drawing techniques and how to find creativity through use of art and pattern books. Please stop by the Ortonville Public Library by June 29 to sign up. We need to let them know how many teens to bring materials for. There is no charge for the program. New Position

I will be the new head librarian at the Graceville Library beginning on June 1, 2009. Ann Lauer, librarian for 30 years, will retire effective June 1, 2009. I will be spending approximately 8 hours a week in Graceville and the remaining 32 in Ortonville. I will be hiring an assistant in Graceville who will work the remaining hours. I look forward to the challenge of serving the two libraries in Big Stone County.

Storytime in the Park

Monica Ferris to visit Library

Monica Ferris, author of many fiction books will be at the Ortonville Public Library on Saturday, May 16th from 1 - 3 p.m. Monica Ferris' real name is Mary Monica Pulver. She grew up in Terre Haute, Indiana. She then moved and fraduated from high school in Milwaukee. She published six medieval mysteries under the pseudonym of Margaret Frazer with Gail Frazer. In 1998, she began writing a new series featuring amateur needleworking sleuth, Betsy Devonshire. The books are set in Excelsior, MN. The first six were in paperback and the last six are hardcovers to be followed by paperback editions. She has taught courses on mystery writing. She has won a place on national and local best-seller lists. She is also a collectyor of exuberant hats and is often seen in them. Come to the library on the 16th and meet Mary (Monica Ferris) Monica Pulver. You will not be disappointed. Refreshments will be served by the Friends of the Ortonville Library.

Teen Survey

The Ortonville Public Library recently purchased Public Performance Site License to show movies at the Library. We will be doing a survey of teens in grades 7 - 10 to see what books and movies they like. We will schedule a teen night at the library. We will do books, and movies. ICMA Grant

The Ortonville Public Library and the City of Ortonville/EDA applied for an ICMA grant to have a Media Center in the lower level of the Library. We were informed on Friday that we did not get this grant. There were 515 applications for the grant. Ortonville did make the final cut to 15, but did not make the cut to the 9 awarded projects. We are filing for a LSTA grant through the State of MN Library Services for the same project. This grant is due on Friday, March 13, 2009. We have not given up getting a media center, just having to look for additional grants. We will post updates as we receive them.

Laverne Doering to retire!

Laverne Doering, a long time employee of the Ortonville Public Library, will be retiring this month. We are planning a special celebration of all her years of service on Saturday, February 28, 2009 from 1 - 3 p.m. at the Library. Refreshments will be served. Laverne started at the Ortonville Library on December 1, 1991. She is currently the president of the Friends of the Library Foundation. She IS our PR person! No one has promoted this library as much as Laverne does and has done. We only hope she will continue to promote and support our library. During her years of working here, she also did substitute for the Appleton Library and the Graceville Library. She also frequented the Milan and Montevideo Public Libraries. She was always one to find the library in whatever town she was in. So, please come and celebrate Laverne's many years of service. She is a wonderful lady that will be missed by all!

Barb Dimich Appearance

Barb is the author of the Apostle Islands Trilogy - Superior's Jewel, Jewel for the Apostles and Madeline's Island. Barb used to work for the Minneapolis police department as a 911 operator. Jeff will be at the Ortonville Public Library on Saturday, January 24th with his new book, "Sherlock Holmes: In Search of the Source". This is the sequel to "Sherlock Holmes and the County Courthouse Caper".
The new book is set in St. Paul in December 1896, ten years after the original book. Holmes has returned to America to attend the wedding of narrator Peter Smith. There are complications: an overnight fire, a life's work destroyed, and worse, a dead body.

Ken Halvorson to Return!

Jeff Falkingham book update

I recveived an email from Jeff stating his second book is currently at the printer with a scheduled release date of January 1. Xlibris, his publisher, tells him they should have hard copies of the book during the week of January 19th. He is tentatively scheduled to be at the Browns Valley Library the morning of January 24th. We are going to try to work it out so Jeff can be here at the library that same afternoon. Watch for more details and a definate time later.

Quilt Winner

Joan Reiffenberger was the lucky winner of the New Year's Reflection quilt made by Viola Mehlhop of Ortonville. The quilt was yellow and blue and 85" x 75". She used about 20 yards of material. It took her six weeks to cutt and piece with the machine. She used 2 1/2 spools quilting thread. Started quilting on August 16th and finished on September 28th. It took her a total of 112 1/2 hours! Then she used 750 yards thread for the hand quilting! What a wonderful job Vi did. The Friends of the Ortonville Library certainly appreciated her making and donating this quilt to us. Ken Halverson Update

I received an email from Ken Halverson today stating that a strange twist may be in the making with his family history. His granddaughter, Sierra (she was here on Saturday with the blonde hair without glasses) is a Johnson from her mother's side. Her mother is from Benson along with a long family blood line. It's now suspected that Oscar Johnson, the police officer that stopped the gang at Coggins and shot and killed his great uncle, maybe Sierra's great great great uncle or grandpa!
Watch for the second book coming in 2009 called "Life With Grandma and Grandpa".

Michael Larson to visit Ortonville Library

Michael Larson, Wheaton and Janine Ringdahl Schmidt will be at the Ortonville Public Library on Satruday, December 6, 2008 with their book "Nature's Christmas Story". It took him 27 years to write the children's book. Janine is the illustrator. Michael will read his book to the Saturday children's reading program kids and then go upstairs for a book talk with all that are interested in hearing how he started to write the book and how he finally got it published. Wow! What a wonderful presentation by KenHalverson on his book "If Grandma is in Heaven, Watch out! The 1930's Bonrud Gang. We had over 40 people in attendance and all were well educated about Gangs in the '30s. Ken brought along a lot of legal papers, pictures, newspaper articles, etc. that really told it all. Thanks again to Ken for coming out and sharing his story with us. He is sending his second book to the printer and it should be out in January. This book follows his grandparents after they got out of prison. We will announce when the book comes out and, hopefully, have copies available for sale her at the library.

Fund Raiser

The Friends of the Ortonville Library Foundation will be holding a fund raiser on Saturday, November 22 from 9 - 1 p.m. at the Community Center. Sports ENT of Iowa will have hoodies for $18 each or 2 for $35; sweatshirts $15 each or 2 for $28; caps $5 each. Some of the names he has are John Deere, Harley, Country Girl, Fox, Playboy, Tapout, MN State, Mn Vikings, Timberwolves, Wilds. He has beanies and caps for all sports and a limited number of baseball caps. Come up to the Community Center and support the library. All proceeds will go towards library needs.

Wow! What a great speaker and author. There was a nice crowd at the community center to see him and ask questions about his books. He was very pleased and happy to have been invited to Ortonville. As he said, I can go a few more feet and be in South Dakota! He enjoyed the area and said what a wonderful library we have. Thanks to all of you for coming to hear him and buy his books. New Year's Reflection Quilt

The Friends of the Ortonville Public Library Foundation are raffling off a quilt called The New Year's Reflections Quilt. The quilt was made by Viola Mehlhop of Ortonville. The quilt is 85" x 75" and is in the colors of blues, golds, and yellows. The quilt is on display at the library. The raffle tickets are available from any member of the Friends group or at the library. The tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20. The drawing for the raffle will be held on Saturday, December 13.

Ken Halverson, author from Andover, MN, will be at the Ortonville Library on Saturday, November 15 from 1 - 3 p.m. Ken is the author of the book "If Grandma's in Heaven, Watch out! The 1930's Bonrud Gang". This is a true story of a gang that operated in the Benson and Montevideo area. They were responsible for many robberies, kidnappings, etc. Ken found out about the Gang after his relatives who were the members of the Gang had passed away. This is going to be quite a fascinating talk of his book and relatives who are living in the Montevideo area. The Friends of the Ortonville Public Library will be providing refreshments.

Big Stone Writers' School Schedule

The Big Stone Writers' School has a number of events planned in the months ahead. For October there will be a workshop at Zion Luthern Church in Ortonville on Thursday, October 16 at 6:30 p.m. On Saturday, October 18 they will be having their annual meeting at 9:00 a.m. at Zion Luthern Church in Ortonville with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m. On Saturday, October 25 there will be a Writers' Road Show at the Madison Public Library at 3:30 p.m.
On Friday, November 24 there will be a Jill Nelson workshop at the Ortonville High School from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The workshop will continue on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. On Thursday, November 20 there will be a Writers' Road Show at the Morris Public Library at 6:30 p.m.

William Kent Kruger, noted Minnesota author who has won many book awards will be coming to Ortonville on Monday, October 20th. He will be at the Community Center at 7 p.m. Krueger writes a mystery series set in the nroth woods of Minnesota. His protagonist is Cork O'Connor, the former sheriff of Tamarack County and a man of mixed heritage--part Irish and park Ojibwe. The seventh book in the series, "Thunder Bay" was released in July of 2007. The latest title in the series, "Red Knife", is due to be released in September of 2008. He will have books available for purchase and signing.

Heidi Haagenson, author of the book "The Tenney Quilt: Celebrating the Women of Minnesota's Tiniest Town", will do a book talk and book signing on Saturday, September 27th from 10:00 - 12:00. Heidi currently lives in Willmar, MN. She will bring the 80-year-old Tenney Quilt with her, and will tell the stories of the women who created that quilt as a fundraiser for a cook stove in the town hall in what is now Minnesota's smallest town (population:6!)

Dealing with weather created quite a flurry of activity yesterday, but in the end we had the kickoff at the Ortonville Public Library. We had between 70 and 80 adults and children. Games were played, registrations done, and ice cream enjoyed by all! Thank you to the Friends of the Library for providing the ice cream.

This summer the Ortonville Public Library will be doing a Storytime in Park. We will be at Lakeside Park each Tuesday, starting on June 10th at 10 a.m. for a storytime. The Ortonville Public Library will be having a new program this year called B.O.O.K., Building Opportunities for Outstanding Kids. This program will pair up first through 6th graders with mentors who are ninth grade and older.
